I Didn't Expect Lake Wabby, K'gari to Feel Like This
Lake Wabby sits at the foot of a sand blow on the eastern side of K'gari and is reached on foot from a signed entry off the surf beach.
According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the sand blow at Lake Wabby is advancing year on year. In 50-100 years the dune will have swallowed the lake.

Boorangoora, which many visitors know as Lake McKenzie, showed me that contrast properly in May 2022. I got there before the first bus and the water was so clear the shadow of my own legs lay on the sand two metres below me. The shallows were cold enough to steal a breath, and by mid-morning the silica squeaked underfoot. Wabby offers none of that clarity. It offers a green lake pressed against a raw dune face, which I find the more interesting thing to stand in front of.

The Moments That Made the Sandblow at Lake Wabby Worth the Trip
Reaching Lake Wabby means getting the beach right first. The eastern surf beach is a gazetted road with speed limits, seatbelts and aircraft landing on it, and it only opens up to you inside a tide window.
August 2024 taught me the patience half of that lesson. I read the tide chart, backed myself, and still sat in the car's shade at the northern bypass near Ngkala Rocks watching the swell drain off the rocks. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current. Waiting cost me a chunk of the morning and saved me a recovery bill, and the same maths applies to any 75 Mile Beach run down to the Wabby entry.
According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the island's sand dunes can reach 240m high. Treat the surf itself as scenery while you are out there: the water off that beach falls under the Great Sandy Marine Park, which sets the fishing rules and turtle protections, and the open ocean along this coast is not a swimming beach. What Surprised Me About Lake Wabby, K'gari
The dingoes surprised me more than the geology did. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, dingoes on K'gari are among the purest-bred in Australia, with little evidence of interbreeding.
April 2023 at Waddy Point Campground made it concrete for me. I turned my back on the camp table for maybe half a minute to grab the billy from the fire, heard the faintest rustle, and turned around to find a dingo already well into the scrub with my bacon and eggs in its mouth. It did not run and it did not panic, it walked off like it owned the place, which on K'gari it more or less does. Read the rules properly on our dingo safety page before you travel with kids.

Three things decide whether a Wabby day works: your tide window, your water, and whether you read the conditions report before leaving the mainland.
Vehicle access and camping both require permits booked in advance, and rangers do check. Sort them through the Queensland Department of Environment's licences and permits page before you leave home. While you are there, note that according to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Cornwells Road on K'gari is partially closed from March to September 2026, affecting access to some inland tracks.
February 2023 is my standing argument for checking the rain radar before committing to any inland route. A summer dump had landed overnight on the Central Station to Lake McKenzie track, unforecast, and I found it reduced to mud holes the size of bathtubs. We crawled along at three kilometres an hour and winched twice, reaching Lake McKenzie as the afternoon storm rolled in. Two cars behind us gave up and turned back.
Drop your tyre pressure before you hit the sand, not once you are already bogged; our 4WD tips page covers the sequence. Carry more drinking water than the day looks like it needs, since most campsites have no tap water. And if you want a pie and a coffee on the eastern side, the bakery at Eurong is the option, and it sells out.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Sort the barge, the permit and the tide first, then think about the walk.
Don't drive the beach at high tide; you can lose a vehicle to the ocean or collect a fine, and neither is a story you want. Don't leave food out at a campsite, and don't climb on the Maheno, which is unstable and officially prohibited.
