Eurong sits on the eastern side of K'gari (Fraser Island) and it is the closest thing the island has to a working service town: fuel, a bakery, a resort, and a ramp straight onto the sand. Plan it as an operational base and your trip runs on tides and tyre pressure. Plan it as a dot on a map and you will spend a chunk of your holiday standing next to a bogged vehicle, waiting.
I Didn't Expect Eurong, K'gari to Feel Like This
Eurong functions as a base because the things that keep a vehicle moving sit close together: fuel, food, a pool, and direct access to the beach. Only 4WD vehicles are permitted on K'gari (Fraser Island), and there are no sealed roads.
Your first two decisions are the barge and the paperwork. According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service guide to K'gari (Fraser Island), the Inskip Point barge takes 10 minutes and costs $130 return for a standard 4WD, while the River Heads barge takes 50 minutes and costs $190 return. According to Queensland Department of Environment licences and permits, a vehicle access permit is required to drive on K'gari (Fraser Island), costing $55.90 for up to one month (2026).
I learned the third decision the hard way at the Wanggoolba Creek barge landing in September 2019. I drove onto the sand with my tyres still at highway pressure on a fully loaded Prado, and fifty metres in the rear end sank like a stone. A bloke in a lifted Patrol pulled me out, pointed at my tyres and said eighteen, mate, not thirty five. Drop your pressures and engage the diff lock on the tarmac, not on the ramp with a queue behind you. The Moments That Made Village days in Eurong Worth the Trip
The early hours on K'gari belong to whoever gets up first.
At Lake McKenzie in April 2021 I had the shoreline to myself at first light. The water was glass, the pure white silica bottom throwing back the earliest light. A dingo trotted along the far beach and ignored me. By mid morning there were a couple of hundred people there, and the same lake read like a public pool.
I arrived at ten in the morning on a Saturday in perfect weather, and the car park held one other vehicle, a couple from Germany who had been there since seven. I waded into water the colour of strong black tea, warm at the edges and cool in the middle, while a sea eagle circled overhead. Choose a mainland day trip instead if you have a single day on the Fraser Coast and no appetite for tide planning.

What Surprised Me About Eurong, K'gari
The eastern beach is a road with rules, not a free-for-all. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, 75 Mile Beach is a registered highway with an 80km/h speed limit and police patrols. Our 75 Mile Beach guide maps the landmarks along it.
At high tide on K'gari's eastern beach you must drive on the dry, softer sand and take the headland bypass tracks, because the hard-packed intertidal zone disappears. If the pools at the northern end are on your list, check the swell first on the Bureau of Meteorology Queensland pages, because flat water leaves you looking at damp rock.
Then there is the bakery, which is a genuine institution and a genuine trap. In July 2023 I got to the bakery before eleven and the pepper pie I wanted was already gone, along with the sausage rolls and the vanilla slice. The woman behind the counter told me the bread comes over on the first barge, fresh and then gone.
Skip the inland run between Wanggoolba Creek and Eurong if the tide window is open and the beach is running.

Pete Temple's Insider Tips for Getting It Right
Most of the trouble I see is avoidable with an hour of preparation. Inland sandy tracks are graded by QPWS roughly every 6-8 weeks, and after heavy rain roads can be impassable for days until the next grading crew arrives.
Read the QPWS conditions report before you leave the mainland. Google Maps does not carry the inland tracks, so download offline maps at home while you still have reception.
Dingo rules are not decoration. Food goes away, scraps go in the bin, and children stay within arm's reach. On the water side, the Great Sandy Marine Park zoning sets the fishing rules and turtle protections, so check your intended spot before you wet a line.
Choose a guided tour instead if nobody in your group has driven on sand before.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Budget for the things that only appear when something goes wrong. Vehicle recovery on K'gari costs $400-800 for a tow truck, RACQ roadside assist does not cover off-road recovery, and you will wait 3-6 hours for a local operator.
Fuel is the other quiet budget killer. Soft sand driving uses roughly twice what highway driving does, so fill up on the mainland and plan your legs around that, not around the gauge you are used to.
Bring a printed tide chart and do not rely on phone reception to look one up. And stand back from the Maheno: climbing it is prohibited, the steel is unstable, and people get hurt on it every year.
