My first morning on the island in April 2021, I drove up to Lake McKenzie ahead of the day-tour convoys. The water was glass, the pure white silica bottom throwing back the earliest light. A single dingo trotted along the far beach and ignored me.

The Moments That Made Sand driving in K'gari (Fraser Island) Worth the Trip
According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, 75 Mile Beach is a registered highway with an 80km/h speed limit and police patrols.
At high tide on the eastern beach the hard corridor near the waterline closes off, so you work higher up the sand and take the headland bypass tracks. Check the swell and weather with the Bureau of Meteorology's Queensland service the night before, then match your departure to the chart rather than to when the group finishes breakfast. At Lake Boomanjin in October 2022, I arrived at ten in the morning on a Saturday in perfect weather, and the car park held one other vehicle, a couple from Germany who had been there since seven. I waded into water the colour of strong black tea, warm around the edges and cool in the centre. A sea eagle circled above me for twenty minutes, and no tour buses, no families with floaties and no boom boxes reached me.
Book a guided trip instead if your licence, insurance or hire agreement won't cover you on sand, since neither the police patrols nor your insurer care that you didn't read the fine print.

What Surprised Me About K'gari (Fraser Island)
K'gari's sand is mostly silica, so it does not get blisteringly hot like darker beach sand.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service notes the sand blow at Lake Wabby is advancing year on year.
Ocean swimming on K'gari is dangerous (strong rips, sharks, no lifeguards). Stick to the lakes and creek. Nobody is coming to get you out of the surf on the eastern beach, and the Great Sandy Marine Park pages set out the zoning and protection rules that apply once you're in the water or fishing off the sand.
At Indian Head (Takky Wooroo) in July 2024, I climbed to the lookout early with a pair of binoculars I had nearly left in the car. Within five minutes I spotted three manta rays gliding below the surface, black silhouettes against the pale sand with their wings moving in slow motion. Then a turtle surfaced for air, and after that a shark maybe forty metres out. A German couple next to me had no binoculars and saw nothing but blue water.

Prepare on the mainland, because the island has no hardware store and limited groceries.
Download offline maps before you leave reception, because Google Maps does not have the inland tracks.
Inland sandy tracks are graded periodically by QPWS, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advises that after heavy rain some become impassable.
And on food: in July 2023 I got to the bakery before eleven and the pepper pie I wanted was already gone, along with the sausage rolls and the vanilla slice. A ranger in the queue told me the bread comes over on the mainland barge at first light, fresh and then gone.
Give this self-drive planning a miss if you can't get a conditions report and a tide chart in front of you before departure day, because both decide whether your route exists at all.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Rangers check permits, and arriving without a vehicle or camping permit earns a fine; the Queensland Department of Environment licences and permits pages handle vehicle permits, fishing licences and camping bookings in one place.
Fuel maths trips people up too, since soft sand driving uses about twice as much fuel as highway driving.
Dingo safety is not advisory: leave food out at a campsite and it will be gone, and the fines for feeding are substantial. The Maheno shipwreck is unstable, rusty and officially prohibited to climb, and every year someone ignores that and gets hurt. Give the whole self-drive idea a rethink if your trip lands in the December to February wet, when afternoon storms, heavy humidity and washouts stack up against you and the sandflies are at their worst.

No. Ocean swimming here carries strong rips and sharks with no lifeguards on patrol, so keep your swimming to the freshwater lakes and Eli Creek, where the water is calm and the worst hazard is a crowded sandbank.
