I Didn't Expect K'gari (Fraser Island) to Feel Like This
Only 4WD vehicles are permitted on K'gari: there are no sealed roads.
I got there before the first bus and the water was so clear the shadow of my own legs lay on the sand two metres below me. Boorangoora is a perched rainwater lake with no inflow, so rinse sunscreen and repellent off before you get in, and carry everything back out with you.

I climbed to the lookout early with a pair of binoculars I had nearly left in the car. I picked up three manta rays gliding below the surface, black silhouettes against the pale sand with their wings moving in slow motion. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the Great Sandy Marine Park sets the zoning, fishing rules and turtle protections that apply to the water you are looking at, so read those before you throw a line in anywhere near the headland.
Skip the climb if you left the binoculars in the car and you were counting on Indian Head as the highlight of the day.

What Surprised Me About K'gari (Fraser Island)
75 Mile Beach is a registered highway with an 80km/h speed limit and police patrols, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service covers the access rules for Fraser Island (K'gari) on its park page. Our 75 Mile Beach guide goes into the run itself.
Mobile reception is patchy: Telstra works at some campsites, Optus and Vodafone barely work at all.
Vehicle recovery on K'gari costs $400 to $800, and RACQ roadside assist does not cover off-road recoveries. Most modern 4WDs require manual engagement of 4x4 mode, and leaving it in 2WD is a common cause of bogging, which is a costly way to learn where the dial on your transfer case lives. Drop your tyre pressures on the mainland, not once you are already sitting in soft sand. Our sand driving notes cover the technique side.
At high tide on the eastern beach the hard corridor near the waterline closes off, so you work higher up the sand and take the headland bypass tracks, slower going and harder on the vehicle. Plan your movements around the tide chart the way you would plan a ferry booking, and check the Bureau of Meteorology Queensland forecast for swell and storm warnings before you commit to a day of beach running.
Inland sandy tracks are graded periodically by QPWS, and after heavy rain some become impassable, so the state of a track last summer tells you nothing about today. You cannot collect firewood, and all campfires must use milled timber brought from the mainland, so bring your own or go without.
A track you have driven before can turn into a long walk.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
The planning mistakes on K'gari are administrative, not heroic.
I got to the bakery before eleven and the pepper pie I wanted was already gone, along with the sausage rolls and the vanilla slice. The woman behind the counter told me the pies go by eleven and to come earlier tomorrow, and a ranger in the queue explained that the bread comes over on the mainland barge at first light, fresh and then gone. I took the last plain meat pie and a flat white that was surprisingly decent.
Buy your vehicle access and camping permits online before you travel, through Queensland Department of Environment licences and permits. Rangers check. Store food so dingoes cannot reach it, never leave it out at a campsite, and stay off the Maheno, which is unstable and officially prohibited no matter what you saw someone else do. Book a guided tour instead when your vehicle, your licence or your nerves are not up to a policed beach highway with tide deadlines attached.
