Boorangoora, the lake the maps call Lake McKenzie, sits in the middle of K'gari and gets photographed more than anything else inland. The swim itself is simple.
I Didn't Expect Lake McKenzie to Feel Like This
Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is a perched lake. It sits above the water table, no streams feeding it. Arrive at first light and you are swimming in rainwater sitting in a bowl of sand.
April 2021, first light. I had the place to myself. The water was glass, the pure white silica bottom throwing back the earliest light. A single dingo trotted along the far beach and ignored me. By mid morning there were a couple of hundred people there.
Late autumn the following year I did the same thing again. I got there before the first bus and the water was so clear the shadow of my own legs lay on the sand two metres below me. The shallows were cold enough to steal a breath; by mid-morning the top layer had gone warm and the silica squeaked underfoot.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service manages the lake within the World Heritage area of K'gari (Fraser Island), and the name Boorangoora belongs to the Butchulla people, whose connection to this country long predates anyone driving a Toyota up the beach.

The Moments That Made Perched lake swimming in Lake McKenzie Worth the Trip
Sand is pure white silica, and it doesn't get blistering hot like darker sand beaches, so wandering barefoot looking for a spot costs you nothing. Depth: most of the swimming area is 1-2m, gradual sandy bottom.
No sunscreen, soap or shampoo in the lake: it is a perched lake with no inflow or outflow, so anything that goes in stays in.
Remote K'gari (Fraser Island) Experience: A Lesser-Known Tour Worth Discovering
This one approaches the island from the water instead of the sand. It's a relaxed full-day boat trip out of Hervey Bay built around snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and a dune bushwalk, with guides covering the island's wildlife and history over lunch.
It does not visit Lake McKenzie. If Boorangoora is why you came to the Fraser Coast, treat this as a second day on the water, not a replacement for the inland run.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service sets the zoning, fishing rules and turtle protections across the surrounding Great Sandy Marine Park, which is worth a read before you get in the water with a snorkel.

What Surprised Me About Lake McKenzie
The water is noticeably cooler than the ocean, and cold enough in winter to shorten a swim. No lifeguards; swim at your own risk. Toilets and change rooms at the car park, no kiosk, bring water.
Dingoes work this car park. Food discipline is not optional, and the current warnings and closures sit on the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service page for the park, updated as conditions change.

Vehicle access: 4WD only via Central Station turn-off (Cornwells Break Road is partially closed March to September 2026, check QPWS conditions first).
The Queensland Department of Environment licences and permits pages are where you sort this out before you travel. Rangers do check.
Ideal visiting window: 6-8 AM or after 4 PM to avoid day-tour bus crowds. The numbers behind that are blunt: pre-8am and post-4pm visits offer near-empty beaches on the same lake.
Drop your tyre pressures before you hit the sand, not once you're already bogged. And according to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the speed limit on 75 Mile Beach is 80km/h, which is plenty on a surface that changes every tide.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Inland tracks change faster than the conditions report does.
February 2023, Central Station to Lake McKenzie. Rain had fallen overnight, not forecast, one of those summer dumps that comes out of nowhere. I found the track reduced to a series of mud holes the size of bathtubs, each one deep enough to swallow a wheel. We crawled along at three kilometres an hour and winched twice, reaching Lake McKenzie as the afternoon storm rolled in. I watched two cars behind us give up and turn back. A snatch strap and rated recovery points did that job. A plain tow ball would have turned it into a very long night.
The Bureau of Meteorology Queensland pages are the ones to watch for rainfall, swell and cyclone warnings before you commit to a wet-season crossing. Swell matters on the other side of the island too, which is why the Champagne Pools can be a genuine letdown on a flat day.
Skip the inland track after heavy rain if your recovery kit stops at a tow ball. There's no shame in waiting a day, and our wider K'gari planning guide covers what else is worth doing while the sand dries out.
