Our Milbi vessel is also the most steady of the bay, our itinerary was designed so we cruise smooth waters only, slowly. Our boat has glass panels to enjoy the coral reefs from the comfort of the vessel. This is the only glass bottom boat in Hervey Bay and one of the largest of Australia.

I would consider the Rainbow Beach departure for guided island sightseeing, because its product record describes purpose-built vehicle travel, the sand highway and Lake McKenzie.

Lake McKenzie gave me a reason to leave space around the fishing plan in April 2021. I had the place to myself at first light. The water was glass, the pure white silica bottom throwing back the earliest light. A single dingo trotted along the far beach and ignored me.

That memory doesn't establish what a guided departure will look like, or promise an empty shoreline.

Lake Boomanjin gave me another very particular memory in October 2022. I arrived at ten in the morning on a Saturday in perfect weather, and the car park held one other vehicle, a couple from Germany who had been there since seven. I waded into water the colour of strong black tea, warm around the edges and cool in the centre.

I liked hearing the water and the wind through the paperbarks.

I would settle Waddy Point camping before building the fishing itinerary. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service guidance supplied for this guide: Camping permits for Waddy Point must be booked through QPWS. Sites are limited and book out 3-6 months ahead for school holidays. Check the QPWS information before committing.

That lead-time guidance is not live availability. Waddy Point is not for a plan that depends on finding an unreserved campsite after arrival. I would secure the booking, read its conditions, and use the camping guide to organise the rest around it.

The supplied QPWS access guidance states: At high tide on K'gari's eastern beach, you must drive on the dry, softer sand and take headland bypass tracks, because the hard-packed intertidal zone disappears. Consult QPWS park guidance; I would not read that description as blanket permission to proceed regardless of conditions.

I would put the beach-driving plan beside a tide chart for the actual travel dates.

I would pack insect protection and check QPWS condition information for the intended route, then consult the Bureau of Meteorology's Queensland information before departure. I wouldn't make an access decision from a pleasant-looking photograph.

For recovery, I would ask my assistance provider and a local operator what they cover, where they can attend, and how charging works.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went

I would check food plans as carefully as the fishing plans, because my Eurong experience left me choosing from what remained. In July 2023, I got to the bakery before eleven and the pepper pie I wanted was already gone, along with the sausage rolls and the vanilla slice.

I took the last plain meat pie and a flat white. I would pack an alternative in the esky and treat the bakery as an option.

What to Check Before Booking

The featured sightseeing records leave those fishing questions unanswered. A boat photograph alone wouldn't persuade me to pay.

For independent travel, I would use the Queensland Government licences and permits information to check the vehicle and camping requirements for the intended trip.

If fishing has to come out of the plan, I would consider a land-based marine-life stop and consult the Indian Head walk guide, checking access through QPWS. I would not quietly substitute a different activity and assume everyone in the party is happy.
