In September 2020 I got to the creek at dawn, before anyone else had put a foot on the boardwalk. The creek was so clear I could count individual grains of sand on the bottom. By mid-morning there were dozens of people floating down on inflatable tubes and the stillness was gone, which is not a complaint so much as a timetable you can work with.

Choose the creek over the lake if you have young kids, limited time on the beach side, or you want a swim that works in the heat of the afternoon when the lake shore is at its busiest.

The Moment I Made My Decision
The lake wins on one condition: you go at the edges of the day. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service reports that Lake McKenzie's visitor numbers peak between 10am and 2pm, while pre 8am and post 4pm visits offer near empty beaches on the same lake.
In May 2022 I tested that properly. I got there before the first bus and the water was so clear the shadow of my own legs lay on the sand two metres below me. The shallows were cold enough to steal a breath; by mid-morning the top layer had gone warm and the silica squeaked underfoot.
My first proper education in sand driving came on a tag-along run through the inland tracks near Central Station in October 2021. Second car in the tag-along line, I learned more in two hours of crackling UHF than in a year of driving alone: where to drop tyre pressures, why you ride the existing ruts, how the soft sand hauls at the wheel before the low-range whine settles it. If you have no sand-driving experience, no recovery gear, or a nervous passenger, take a tag-along. Self-drive only with a genuine high-clearance off-road vehicle with low range, deflated tyres, a shovel and recovery tracks, and your vehicle access permit bought online before you reach the barge. The Queensland Department of Environment handles vehicle permits, fishing licences and camping bookings, and rangers do check.
K'gari (Fraser Island) Explorer 2-Day Tour: When One Day Isn't Enough
Two days changes the arithmetic. You get hotel rooms at K'gari Beach Resort, a small-group format, and stops a single day cannot fit, including Lake Wabby. What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
The single rule that overrides everything else here: swimming in the ocean is dangerous, with strong rips, sharks and no lifeguards, so stick to the lakes and creeks, as Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service states for K'gari. Eli Creek runs out across the sand into surf you must stay out of.
In August 2024 I read the tide chart, backed myself, and still sat forty minutes in the car's shade at the northern Ngkala Rocks bypass watching the swell drain off the rocks. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current. Check the Bureau of Meteorology before you commit.
Lake Boomanjin is the world's largest perched lake at 200 hectares, tea coloured rather than crystal clear like McKenzie, and sees a fraction of McKenzie's crowds, according to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
