Eli Creek is a freshwater creek that crosses 75 Mile Beach on the eastern side of K'gari, and the one variable that decides your visit is what hour you arrive. Plan around the clock, not the map.
In September 2020 I waded in moments after dawn, when the water was still glass and the only footprints on the boardwalk were mine. The creek was so clear I could count individual grains of sand on the bottom. By mid morning there were dozens of people floating down on inflatable tubes and the stillness was gone. Nothing was wrong with the later version. It was a different place, and I'd already had the one I came for.
According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Eli Creek pours 4 million litres of freshwater into the ocean every hour. A short boardwalk runs upstream along the creek, which is what makes this stop workable for people who can't manage soft sand for long.

The Moments That Made Freshwater swimming in Eli Creek Worth the Trip
The thing worth planning for here is the float. The current does the work.
In August 2024 I ran the eastern beach up toward the Ngkala Rocks bypass north of Waddy Point. I read the tide chart, backed myself, and still sat forty minutes in the car's shade at the northern bypass watching the swell drain off the rocks. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current.
Plan any run on the surf beach for roughly two hours either side of low tide, treat the beach as the gazetted road it is, with speed limits, seatbelts, and giving way to aircraft. According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, 75 Mile Beach carries a speed limit of 80km/h. Save the Champagne Pools for low tide as well, because the open ocean along this stretch is not for swimming. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service publishes the zoning and protection rules for the surrounding Great Sandy Marine Park if you're fishing or boating on the same trip.

What Surprised Me About Eli Creek
The surprise isn't the creek. It's how bare the site is. There's no facilities; toilets at the day-use area, no kiosk. Everything you want at Eli Creek has to come off the back seat of whatever brought you there.
Access is the other one people underestimate. Pete Temple's Insider Tips for Getting It Right
Timing beats everything else on this page. Go at 6-8 AM or after 4 PM. 9 AM onwards is busy with day-tour buses.
Get your tyres right before the sand, not after. At the Wanggoolba Creek barge landing in September 2019, I drove onto the sand with my tyres still at highway pressure on a fully loaded Prado, and fifty metres in the rear end sank like a stone. A local in a lifted Patrol pulled me out, pointed at the tyres, and said eighteen, mate, not thirty five. Drop your pressures on the ramp while you're still stationary and unembarrassed.
Bring the water. There's no tap water at the creek and none at the parking area, and soft-sand driving burns through fuel and patience at a rate that catches people out. Download offline maps before you leave the mainland, because the inland tracks don't show up the way you expect.
What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Two things: the permit is not optional, and the insects are quicker than you are. Sort both before you arrive and the trip stays affordable and itch-free.
On the paperwork: permit required: $55.90 vehicle access, and the Queensland Department of Environment sets out what you need through its licences and permits pages, alongside camping bookings and fishing licences.
On the insects, I learned this at Central Station Campground in January 2023. I pitched my tent in the late afternoon in heavy heat and thick humidity. Within about ninety minutes my ankles were covered in sandfly bites, raised itchy welts that lasted ten days. I had DEET in the car but told myself I would only be a minute. Sandflies do not need a minute.
