The shallows were cold enough to steal a breath; by mid-morning the top layer had gone warm and the silica squeaked underfoot. Boorangoora is a perched rainwater lake with no inflow, so rinse sunscreen and repellent off before anyone gets in, and carry out everything you carry down. Eli Creek pours 4 million litres of freshwater into the ocean every hour, which gives you a shallow, moving, ankle-to-knee waterway with a boardwalk at the top and a sandy exit at the bottom.
Eli Creek is spring-fed freshwater and runs cold year-round, a shock on the ankles even in summer. When I waded in at first light in September 2020, the water was still glass and the only footprints on the boardwalk were mine. The creek was so clear I could count individual grains of sand on the bottom. By mid morning there were dozens of people floating down on inflatable tubes and the stillness was gone. What Surprised Me About K'gari (Fraser Island)
Speed limits apply, seatbelts apply, and you give way to aircraft. Tides set your departure time rather than your alarm clock, so plan any run on the eastern surf beach for roughly two hours either side of low tide.
At the Ngkala Rocks bypass north of Waddy Point in August 2024, I read the tide chart, backed myself, and still sat forty minutes in the car's shade at the northern bypass watching the swell drain off the rocks. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current.
The Champagne Pools are natural rock pools that fill with seawater at high tide, creating a safe swimming spot, which makes them the one saltwater option a family can reasonably use. Water, food storage, fuel and permits all need sorting on the mainland, because the island's shops carry basics at well above mainland prices and fresh produce is limited.
Carry more drinking water than you think you need, since there is no tap water at most campsites. Drop your tyre pressures before you hit the sand instead of after you are already bogged, and engage 4WD manually before rolling off the barge, because modern vehicles default to two-wheel drive and the ramp sand is softest right at the entry point.

Book campgrounds well ahead for school holidays and sort your vehicle and camping permits before you travel, since rangers check. What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went

In Hervey Bay in August 2021, I booked the cheapest whale watch I could find, a half day cruise at a bargain price. The boat had well over a hundred people on it. By the time a humpback surfaced two hundred metres off the port side, I was wedged behind a family of five with iPads. I saw the whale through their screens.
The planning errors worth checking before you book: driving the beach near high tide, arriving without permits, underestimating fuel on soft sand, leaving food out at camp, and letting anyone climb the Maheno shipwreck, which is unstable, rusty and officially prohibited.
Book a different trip when your dates fall outside the whale season and someone in the family was counting on humpbacks.
