That experience makes passenger capacity and viewing access part of my decision, not an afterthought. I would ask how passengers share the viewing areas and whether seating arrangements suit anyone in the party who needs to sit.
September: If the calendar is flexible and whales are the reason for travelling, this is a month I would put on the shortlist.

September sits within the supplied peak window, but my booking judgement also rests on what happens during an encounter. I want a skipper who explains the approach rules and gives wildlife space.
In Platypus Bay in September 2024, I paid extra for an early morning departure on a small boat rather than the cheap crowded one, and within the first hour we had found a mother and calf. The skipper killed the engines and we drifted. The calf approached while the mother moved underneath.
I would not turn that encounter into a promise about departure times, prices or whale behaviour. What matters to my judgement is the skipper’s restraint. I want the briefing to explain what the boat must do, not build an expectation that passengers are entitled to a close encounter.

Packing Lessons I Learned the Hard Way
I would confirm luggage arrangements with the operator, check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast and pack for the actual outing on the booking.
My bag would include sun protection, a light rain layer, drinking water and protection for anything I want to keep dry. I would choose that rain layer over a brolly for convenience. According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Queensland service, current forecasts and warnings are available to inform weather planning; check them again near departure.
In July 2019, I stood barefoot on the Inskip sand at first light with my thongs in one hand, watching the ramp grind down into ankle-deep water and the gulls lift off the wash.
For K'gari, also known as Fraser Island, I would put repellent beside the sunscreen and include sandflies in the packing conversation. Permit bureaucracy and possible washouts belong on the planning list too. Check Queensland’s licences and permits information and current Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advice before committing to an island driving plan.
During my August 2024 trip around the Ngkala Rocks bypass, the tide still dictated the day despite my planning. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current. I would keep that lesson separate from any promise about a boat departure.

Refer to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service for current island access information, and use the Indian Head walk guide to assess that separate outing.
I would bring binoculars, but I would not sell the clifftop as a guaranteed substitute for a humpback cruise.
K'gari has over 350 species of birds and the Great Sandy Strait on its western side is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance. I would leave room for that wider wildlife interest and respect the Butchulla people’s connection to K'gari.
Several Hervey Bay operators now offer swim with whales experiences, a recent addition to the traditional boat based watching tours. That regional fact does not establish a swimming inclusion in any featured product. If swimming is essential, ask for explicit confirmation of the activity and its conditions before paying.
My final booking check would cover the actual departure date, viewing access, passenger capacity, included food and the written cancellation terms. Ask what happens if the operator cancels and what happens if you cancel; those are separate questions.
