The Moment I Made My Decision
The eastern surf beach is what settles the argument for most drivers. It is a working road with enforcement attached, not a wide open playground, and the tide decides whether it is a road at all on the afternoon you turn up.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service treats it exactly as it sounds: 75 Mile Beach is a registered highway with an 80km/h speed limit and police patrols. Seatbelts on, give way to aircraft, and read it like the gazetted road it is.
In August 2024 I read the tide chart, backed myself, and still sat in the car's shade at the Ngkala Rocks bypass north of Waddy Point, watching the swell drain off the rocks before I could move. Coming back, Eli Creek ran cold and glass-clear over my ankles, the ripples in the sand shifting under the current. That day cost me nothing except patience, and patience costs less than anything else you will spend on the island. Plan any run on the eastern beach around low tide, save Champagne Pools for low tide as well, and check the Bureau of Meteorology's Queensland forecasts for swell before you commit.
What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Four things sink self drive trips, and none of them are the hire cost. Drivers arrive without a permit, leave the transfer case alone at the ramp, misjudge the food rules at camp, and fail to check conditions before committing to an inland track.
The ramp is where it starts. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service covers the vehicle basics, and here is the one people miss: Most modern 4WDs require manual engagement of 4x4 mode, and leaving it in 2WD is a common cause of bogging within 100 metres of the barge ramp. Drop your tyre pressure and engage low range before you roll off, not after the wheels have dug in.
Then there is the food. At Waddy Point in April 2023 I turned my back on the camp table for maybe half a minute to grab the billy from the fire. I heard the faintest rustle, turned around, and a dingo was already well into the scrub with my breakfast in its mouth. It did not run and it did not panic, it walked off like it owned the place, which on K'gari it more or less does.
Check the QPWS conditions report before you leave the mainland, because closures, dingo alerts and planned burns change what you can reach. The Kingfisher Bay Resort barge is pedestrian only, so you cannot take a vehicle on it, meaning you are stuck at the resort unless you have booked a tour with transport.
