How You Actually Get There

Kingfisher Bay is on the western side of the island, across roughly 15 kilometres of quiet water from Hervey Bay. The crossing is from River Heads, about 30 minutes south of Hervey Bay by car, on the Kingfisher Bay passenger ferry. Crossing time is around 50 minutes each way, and your car stays in the mainland carpark. There is no bridge, no vehicle barge to the resort jetty, and no way to drive your own car across.

From Brisbane, the trip is roughly five hours door to door if you drive. From Hervey Bay, it's a 40-minute drive to the ferry and then the crossing. Plan the ferry times into your day: the first ferry off the island is usually around 7:00at the and the last crossing back is late afternoon. Missing the last ferry means an unplanned night at the resort.

Staying at Kingfisher Bay

The resort has hotel-style rooms set into the wallum scrub, each with a balcony looking over the bay. They are not luxurious but they are clean, air-conditioned, and quiet. Bring a power adaptor for the bore, a light jacket for the morning ferry, and a sense of pace. There is no nightlife beyond the bar. Day Tours and the 4WD Excursions

The morning tours are the reason to base yourself here. Where It Falls Short

Kingfisher Bay is on the leeward side of the island, which means you do not get the beach-driving experience. 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno wreck viewed from the sand, the Champagne Pools at sunrise, the Indian Head headland walk at low tide, none of that is on your doorstep. The bus tours dip in and out of the eastern highlights, but you are watching from the bus window for half the day. If you have always wanted to drive the beach yourself, this resort will not scratch that itch.

Pricing is also higher than self-drive alternatives. A Eurong tent site for two nights costs roughly $80. Two nights at Kingfisher Bay runs ten times that. The resort is the convenience cost. For visitors who don't own a 4WD and don't want to learn sand driving, the convenience is worth it. For everyone else, base yourself on the eastern side.

Who Should Choose Kingfisher Bay

Visitors without a 4WD. Families with kids who need a pool and a soft floor under their feet. Anyone flying into Hervey Bay for a long weekend and not renting a 4WD. Older travellers who don't want to wrestle with tyre pressures and snatch straps. Anyone who has always wanted to see Fraser Island but does not want to learn how to drive one to do it. The morning tours do the heavy lifting. The resort handles the meals. The ferry handles the crossing. You just have to be on it.
