I Didn't Expect Central Station, K'gari to Feel Like This
Central Station is a working ranger base and campground in central K'gari, built on the bones of a timber operation, and it is the trailhead for the island's fern boardwalk. According to the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Central Station was once a forestry settlement with a school and houses for loggers and their families. It was converted to a ranger station and camping area when logging ceased in 1991.
Those enormous satinays standing over the clearing are survivors of an industry, not decoration. Nobody signposts that loudly, and the Butchulla connection to this country runs far longer than either the logging era or the tourism one, so treat the site as somewhere with a history rather than a photo stop.
From the clearing, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service notes that Central Station is the starting point for the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk, a 700-metre walk through ancient king ferns and satinay trees along a crystal-clear freshwater creek.

This format is not for you if you want to be a passenger with a camera. You are driving a 4WD on sand for three days, and a nervous driver in the group feels every minute of it.
The Moments That Made Rainforest walks in Central Station Worth the Trip
The moments worth planning around on K'gari are the quiet ones, and they come from timing and detours, not from ticking off the headline stops. Two of mine happened away from the crowds: a tea-coloured lake in the south with an empty car park, and a headland where a pair of binoculars turned blue water into wildlife.
Lake Boomanjin, October 2022. I arrived at ten in the morning on a Saturday in perfect weather, and the car park held one other vehicle, a couple from Germany who had been there since seven. The water is the colour of strong black tea, warm at the edges and cool through the middle, and a sea eagle worked circles overhead while I swam. No buses, no floaties, no boom boxes.
Indian Head (Takky Wooroo), July 2024, was the other one. I climbed to the lookout early with a pair of binoculars I had nearly left in the car. Three manta rays showed up as black silhouettes over pale sand, a turtle surfaced for air, and a shark cruised past further out. A German couple beside me had no binoculars and saw blue water. What Surprised Me About Central Station, K'gari
The genuine surprise at Central Station is what the trees are standing in. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service records that island's rainforest grows in pure sand, the only place on Earth where this happens.
According to the Queensland Department of Environment's licences and permits information, camping at Central Station requires a vehicle access permit ($55.90/month) plus camping fees ($6.85/person/night). The campground has hot showers, flush toilets, and coin-operated BBQs.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is blunt: you cannot collect firewood. All campfires must use milled timber brought from the mainland.

Getting Central Station right is mostly about what you load before the barge.
Stock up at the IGA in Rainbow Beach, not the servo. Fill the tank in Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, because soft sand drinks fuel at a rate that shocks first-timers. Download offline maps before you leave range, because the inland tracks do not exist on Google Maps.

Somebody else handles the tents, the driving and the food while you cover 75 Mile Beach, Eli Creek and the Maheno shipwreck, and you sleep in a powered bell tent. Choose a different tour if you dislike sharing a camp kitchen and a fixed schedule with strangers.

July 2023, and I learned this the dull way. I got to the bakery before eleven and the pepper pie I wanted was already gone, along with the sausage rolls and the vanilla slice. The woman behind the counter told me the pies go by eleven and to come earlier tomorrow. I took the last plain meat pie and a flat white, while a ranger in the queue explained the bread comes over on the mainland barge at first light.
What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
The planning errors that cost real money on K'gari are all pre-departure ones: no permit, no tide plan, and no idea what the inland tracks have been doing since the last rain.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advises that inland sandy tracks are graded by QPWS roughly every 6-8 weeks. After heavy rain, roads can be impassable for days until the next grading crew arrives.
Check the Bureau of Meteorology Queensland forecast for swell and storms, and read the QPWS conditions report before you commit to a route, because it lists closures, dingo alerts and planned burns.
