Fraser Island (K'gari) is dingo country I recommend booking the K'Gari (Fraser Island) All Inclusive Day Tour.. Before you set foot on the sand, read this. It could save an animal's life, and it could save yours.

fe, and it could save yours.

The dingoes on Fraser Island are the purest dingo population in Australia. They are wild animals. They are not dogs. They are not pets. They have not been bred out of their instincts, and they will not behave like the family pet at home. A dingo that looks relaxed on the beach is still a wild predator, and it is watching you far more closely than you are watching it.

Most visitors go their whole trip without a bad encounter. The ones who get into trouble almost always broke a rule, usually without meaning to. The rules below are not suggestions. Rangers, researchers, and generations of local operators built them from hard experience.

The rules that matter

Stay within arm's reach of children at all times

This is the single most important rule on the island. Children are the most at risk, and dingoes read a small, separated child the way they read separated prey. Do not let kids walk ahead, wander to the water, or fall behind the group. Within arm's reach means exactly that: close enough to grab, every second, all day.

Do not run

Running triggers the chase instinct. It is hard-wired and it is fast. If a dingo approaches, stand tall, face it, fold your arms, and back away slowly while keeping it in view. Never turn and sprint. Joggers on the beach are a known flashpoint, so if you exercise, do it inside a fenced area.

Do not feed them

Feeding a dingo, on purpose or unintentionally, is the fastest way to kill it. Once a dingo learns that humans mean food, it loses its fear and starts approaching people. That is where bites happen and where the animal's fate is sealed.

Secure all food, including bait and rubbish

Lock food away in your vehicle or a hard container. That includes fishing bait, an esky left open, scraps around the campsite, and a rubbish bag on the ground. If a dingo can smell it or reach it, treat it as feeding. Pack out everything you bring in.

A fed dingo is a dead dingo

Dingoes that become habituated to humans are euthanized. There is no relocation, no second chance, no sanctuary. When an animal stops fearing people it becomes a danger to the next family on the beach, and the only outcome is a bullet. Every scrap you leave and every photo you get too close for pushes a wild dingo one step toward that end. Keeping them wild is the only way to keep them alive.

At night, stay behind the fence

Dingoes are most active around dawn, dusk, and through the night. Stay in fenced areas at night. Eurong and Kingfisher Bay have dingo fences, and those enclosures exist for a reason. Do not camp in the open unless you know what you are doing and are properly set up, and never leave a tent flap or a car door open with food inside.

Carry a dingo stick or a sturdy walking pole when you are out on foot, know where the nearest fenced refuge is, and report any aggressive or bold dingo to the QPWS rangers straight away. Respect the animal, keep your distance, and K'gari will give you one of the wildest experiences left in Australia.

Fraser Island is also known by its traditional name, K'gari. Please follow all Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service signage and current ranger advice while on the island.
