I have run trips out of both towns for years, and the question I get asked more than any other is simply which one to base yourself in. The honest answer depends on how you want to reach the island and what you want to do once you are there. Hervey Bay is the easy option. Fly into Hervey Bay Airport, take a taxi to Urangan Marina, board a whale watching boat or the Kingfisher Bay ferry. You never need to hire a car.
The barge to the island runs from River Heads, about 20 minutes south of town, and the crossing takes 45 minutes. That lands you near Kingfisher Bay Resort, the most developed base on the western side of the island, with a restaurant, a bar and proper beds. Hervey Bay itself has the full range of hotels, cafes and restaurants you would expect from a regional city, so you are never short of somewhere to eat or sleep before and after your island trip.
The headline attraction is the whales. Hervey Bay is the whale watching capital of Australia, and from July through November the sheltered waters of Platypus Bay fill with humpbacks that rest and play here on their migration. The sightings are close, frequent and reliable, which is why boats sell out fast in peak season. If whales are on your list, this is not a close call. Base yourself in Hervey Bay and get out on the water.
Hervey Bay is also where nearly every organised day tour departs, so it is the natural choice if you do not want to drive on sand yourself. Between the ferries, the tours and the whale boats, you can build a full multi-day trip here without ever touching a steering wheel.
Rainbow Beach: The Fast Option
Rainbow Beach is the fast option. The barge from Inskip Point takes 15 minutes versus 45 from River Heads. You drive onto the sand and the island starts immediately. But Rainbow Beach itself is tiny, one main street, a pub, a bakery, and that is about it.
What Rainbow Beach lacks in amenities it makes up for in access and character. The Carlo Sand Blow sits right on the edge of town, a vast sheet of drifting white sand with views back over the coloured sand cliffs and out to the ocean. It is a short walk from the main street and one of the best free things to do anywhere on the Fraser Coast. The coloured sand cliffs themselves, streaked in ochre, red and gold, run along the beach south of town and are worth timing for the golden hour.
The town has a strong backpacker vibe. Hostels, surf schools and 4WD hire outfits dominate, and the crowd skews young and independent. If you want to hire a vehicle, load up your own gear and be first onto the island each morning, Rainbow Beach is built for exactly that. Just do not come expecting nightlife or a wide choice of restaurants, because the pub and the bakery really are most of it.
What It Costs to Cross
Barge pricing is the other practical difference. The Hervey Bay ferry from River Heads runs around $170 return for a vehicle. The Inskip Point barge out of Rainbow Beach runs around $130 return. Rainbow Beach is cheaper as well as faster, but remember that the Hervey Bay side puts you closer to Kingfisher Bay Resort and its facilities, which can be worth the extra outlay if you are not camping.
So Which One Should You Pick?
If you are doing a day tour, depart from Hervey Bay. The tours all leave from there. If you are self-driving, Rainbow Beach saves you 30 minutes of barge time each way. If you only have one day, Hervey Bay is the answer.
My rule of thumb is simple. Whale season plus limited time means Hervey Bay every time. A self-drive adventure on a budget, with early starts and a taste for the rugged side of things, points to Rainbow Beach. Many travellers who have the time do both: a couple of nights in Hervey Bay for the whales and the comfort, then a run down to Rainbow Beach to drive on from Inskip Point.
