Now let me tell you why people put up with the sand and the tide timing in the first place. Lake McKenzie looks photoshopped. It is not photoshopped. Pure rainwater filtered through sand. No fish. The water sits in a perched dune, meaning it is held above sea level by a compacted layer of sand and organic matter, so nothing flows in from a creek or the sea. That is why it is so clear and why the sand around the edge is bright white silica. You can rinse your silver jewellery in it and walk out with it polished. That part is real, not a tour guide story.

Tide matters just as much. Seventy Five Mile Beach is a legal road, but it is only drivable around low tide. Eli Creek is the busiest spot on the island for a reason. It is a beautiful clear freshwater creek that pours across the beach, and you can float down it.
